Lurik Woven Artisan
Traditional woven
Dibyo Lurik was founded by Dibyo Sumarto in 1962 in Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta, starting as a small home-based handweaving enterprise to preserve traditional non-machine woven (ATBM) lurik. Dibyo Sumarto previously worked as a weaver at a textile factory in Danunegaran, Yogyakarta, which eventually closed. Using his experience as a former weaving laborer, he started his own traditional loom workshop at home in Krapyak, Bantul. While many traditional lurik craftsmen went out of business during the mass wave of modern textile industrialization in the 1970s and 1990s, Dibyo Sumarto's enterprise (historically associated with Kurnia Lurik) kept the traditional Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin (ATBM) alive. Jussy Rizal, the grandson of Dibyo Sumarto, continues his grandfather’s legacy by carrying on the handwoven Lurik business under the Dibyo brand. Operated under the Dibyo Lurik identity, the workshop continues to produce authentic handwoven traditional fabrics, featuring classic motifs like Udan Liris (drizzle) and natural dyes.
